Blob

The pink ooze slithered across David’s carpet with vicious intent. Once nothing more than a shapeless abomination, it had now taken the form of his girlfriend, Jessica, beckoning him to come closer.
He stared at the gelatinous replica which now undulated hypnotically. A single drop touched his face and he froze, knowing assimilation was inevitable.

Have you ever seen The Blob? I have. Both the 1958’s Steve McQueen version and the 1988 remake which is considered by many to be better than the original. While the practical effects in the latter are great (and disgusting), I was never much of a fan of the movie overall. When it comes to 80’s horror movies, John Carpenter’s The Thing is still my personal favorite.

Anyway, the 1988 version of The Blob was on a cable channel this afternoon and I caught a glimpse of its digestive properties once again as I was zapping and that gave me an idea to use the concept in a different way which turned out to be it. Beware of shape-shifting goo.

You Saved Everyone

Alan sighed. So many awards… Hero of Cleas, and for what?”
“You saved everyone. Why are you so mad?” a sultry voice whispered.
“Because now I’m stuck with you forever!”
“And I couldn’t be happier,” the demon smirked. “My turn.”
His eyes went blank as she took over again. There would be blood that night.

An idea I had recently that has the potential to become something else in the future. The basic scenario is this: imagine a city on the verge of a natural disaster. Imagine an ordinary man that unleashes an ancient demon as said disaster is taking place. Imagine that by merging with her, he’s able to save everyone and become a hero but now has to pay the price. Imagine there are more demons like her out there and she’s after them all.

Yeah, that’s one of the things going on in my mind at the moment. I’m not sure if I’m going to do anything with it or not just yet but I did write this as an appetizer, I guess. I’ll let you more when I know more myself. In the meantime…

Underwhelmed

“That’s it?” Walter frowned.
“Something wrong?” Paula asked.
“Yeah! Your hypnosis skills suck! Nothing happened, for fuck’s sake!”
“Sorry if I’ve wasted your time.”
“Whatever… Just don’t do it ever again.”
He got up from her sofa and headed home, never questioning why he was dressed like a stripper about ready to work the pole.

I was going to do another supernatural/Halloween piece today and in fact, I wrote one during my lunch break but then I realized I didn’t like it so I shifted gears into something else and this humorous tidbit was what came next. Underwhelming things are the worst, aren’t they? Perception continues to be a funny thing and a good theme to work with.

In other news, we’ve reached 300 days of 2021. The final stretch of this year’s challenge is coming. What other surprises are waiting in store? You’ll need to keep reading the stories to find out.

Soulmates

“NO!” Willa screamed.
“Easy my love, I’m here,” a ghost whispered in his ear.
“Amanda?”
“Who else?”
“That can’t be!” she convulsed in bed. “You’re dead! I saw you die.”
“I’ll never leave. We’re soulmates, remember?”
“I was your prisoner!”
“Some things never change…”
Willa screamed again but there was no one around to listen.

This is a retooling of the piece I mentioned yesterday. I didn’t like how the original version played out so I adjusted a few things until I was pleased with the result. You’re probably curious about that first concept now and while I thought about posting it here as part of this commentary, I ultimately decided not to do it seeing this is the version I enjoy anyway. Sometimes, soulmates are good. Other times, they’re just creepy ghosts that will never leave you alone.
