You shouldn’t mess with the wrong woman, just saying.
I Need Your Help
June checked her phone again: 11:47 p.m. The shortcut through Mercer Alley would save her ten minutes, and her feet were killing her after an exhausting shift. Halloween decorations still sagged from the fire escapes, paper skeletons swaying in a wind she couldn’t feel.
Four men stood near the dumpsters, passing an almost empty bottle around. One of them was wearing devil plastic horns. Another held a foam axe in his right hand.
“Well, hello,” said the tallest one.
She kept walking.
“Hey, we’re talking to you.” Footsteps scuffed behind her. “Don’t be rude.”
“Smile, sweetheart. It’s a holiday.”
Someone laughed. The one with the horns stepped into her path, and as she tried to go around him, a hand clamped onto her ass, unwilling to let go.
June stopped and exhaled. It was a long breath of someone who had been through this too many times. She looked up at the dead streetlight and whispered.
“I need your help.”
The air changed.
Her breath fogged. Frost crawled up the brick walls. The paper skeletons stopped swaying and hung perfectly, unnaturally still.
“What’d she say?” one of them muttered.
June’s head tilted slowly. When she lifted her eyes, they were no longer hers. They were black and bottomless and very, very old.
“Gladly,” she said, in a voice that housed a legion.
The bottle shattered on the pavement.
“Hey, wait, we were just…”
The shadows in the alley peeled off the walls. Long fingers, and even longer arms, stretched all around them. The temperature plunged until the men’s lashes whitened.
“Oh God, oh God, Danny, run…”
The first scream was cut short, but the ones that followed went on much longer. By midnight, Mercer Alley was silent again, a single paper skeleton drifting down from the fire escape to land, gently, on the ground.
