Spell… H-A-L-L-O-W-E-E-N 2026 – Day 16

Spell… H-A-L-L-O-W-E-E-N is back! Let’s enjoy another month of supernatural fun.

Music boxes and porcelain dolls… What could possibly go wrong?

Transformation

Mara noticed the first crack on Tuesday, a hairline fracture across her knuckle that didn’t hurt. It only chimed, like a spoon against a teacup.

The woman in the antique shop had smiled too widely when she sold her the music box. “She likes company,” the woman had said, and never explained who she was.

By Wednesday, Mara’s skin had gone cool and glossy. She couldn’t feel the cold. She tried to scream when her fingernails turned to painted pink enamel, but her breath came out as a soft, tinkling melody. The music box, sitting on her nightstand, was playing along.

By Thursday, she could no longer blink.

From the shelf, she watched as her husband searched the house, calling her name. He picked her up once, absently, to dust. His thumb brushed her glass eyes. I’m here, she thought. Look at me. Look at me.

He set her down beside the others.

That’s when she noticed them: a dozen porcelain faces, each frozen mid-scream, painted lips curved in identical, serene smiles. Their eyes, glass and wet, slid toward her.

Something old and patient hummed from inside the music box.

“*Welcome,*” whispered the doll beside her, without moving her mouth. “*Don’t worry. The stitching on the smile doesn’t hurt.*”

Mara felt her own lips begin to curl upward, slowly, against her will.

Downstairs, her husband stopped calling her name.

Then, softly, he began to hum along.
