Creepy horror and mind control go hand in hand in this piece of micro-fiction.
Please Don’t
The chill of her breath pricked the back of Arthur’s ear like a needle long before his legs disobeyed him. He meant to turn toward the subway, but his right knee seized, pitching him forward onto the broken asphalt of 4th Street. It wasn’t a voice that commanded him, but a hook set deep behind his ribs, hauling him past the bodega’s flickering neon sign.
“Keep walking,” came the whisper from a shadow that stretched too far over his.
A coppery bitterness washed over his tongue. He tried to shout to the boy slouched by the newsstand, but his lips only softened into a placid smile. The strain of it burned in his cheeks. He was a spectator now, locked behind his own eyes, watching through a body he no longer controlled.
She drifted just beyond the edge of sight. He caught the rustle of brittle silk and the damp smell of pond scum cutting through exhaust fumes. At the curb, his body finally stopped. Cars blurred past; headlights swam in oily puddles.
“Don’t”, he screamed inside the static filling his mind. “Please”.
Something cold and impossibly heavy settled against his spine. A pale hand slid over his shoulder and turned his face gently toward the grill of an approaching bus.
