Spell… H-A-L-L-O-W-E-E-N returns in 2025! It’s another month of supernatural content waiting for you.
Today, we have a simple piece of microfiction about an experiment gone wrong. Have fun.
Creating the Monster
Dr. Hammond wrinkled his nose at the sharp antiseptic smell as he pushed open the lab door. Another day, another trial run.
“Jane?” he called, spotting his assistant hunched over a microscope. “How’s the behavioral control serum looking?”
She turned, and Hammond froze. Something was wrong with her eyes: the whites bloodshot, pupils dilated to black pools.
“Jane, are you feeling—”
She moved faster than seemed possible, and Hammond barely registered what was happening before teeth tore into his neck. The pain was immediate, blinding. His knees buckled.
He woke up with a splitting headache, wrists raw from metal restraints. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, making his eyes water. Through the blur, he could make out his team moving around the lab. Their movements were jerky and unnatural, their faces pallid.
“What the hell did you do to me?” His voice came out as a rasp.
It was then that the hunger hit him, a gnawing emptiness that clawed up from his stomach. But worse was the strange compulsion, the voice in his head that wasn’t his own.
Stand up. Come here.
His body responded before his mind could resist.
Good boy.
Hammond had created the monster, and now he’d become one.
