Hunted

The mermaid stared at the two fishermen from inside her aquatic cage.
“I can’t believe we got one!” Jack said, wiping the fresh blood off his lips.
“It was hard, but worth it,” Andrew noted. “The military will pay big bucks for her.”
“What? Is that what we’re doing? Selling her for experiments?”
“Of course, dumbass! You thought we were keeping her as a pet?”
“No, but…”
“But nothing! This is our big break, so let’s make the best of it.”
Jack sighed, eyes fixed on the majestic water creature. The cage was soundproof, so why could he still hear her singing inside his mind? The glint of a harpoon flashed to the right, and he knew what he had to do.
Andrew’s body hasn’t been found yet, but Jack’s washed ashore two hours later, the grin of a madman plastered on his shredded face.
