Excerpts

Always on Top

(…)

Anna Pattinson was a female supremacist. She believed with all her heart that men were inferior to her in every way and that it was their job to acknowledge that and give her everything she wanted, starting with their unconditional obedience and servitude.

Of course, hardly anyone she met did that willingly and so it was her ultimate pleasure to show a fool or two exactly who was the boss. Her favorite hobby was doing that to men who tried to belittle or intimidate her, like the tall blond sitting behind the wheel of a red convertible as she was exiting the parking lot. He cut her lane, tried to force an accident, and then had the audacity of calling her out for reckless driving. Upon seeing his moronic smirk, Anna unfastened her seat belt, pulled down her sunglasses and looked at him with icy eyes.

“Are you done complaining?” she asked.

An Experiment

(…)

Jonathan banged his head against the viridescent glass chamber in Emma’s basement, and screamed,

“Have you gone mad? Let me out!”

His old childhood friend, now a full-grown woman with a mischievous smile and a feisty temper only a few people were able to handle, raised her head slightly to look at him, ignored his plea, and then continued to tinker with the luminous control panel in front of her.

The chamber she had trapped him in was an invention of hers, a little experiment to determine if it was possible to alter and replace another person’s brainwaves at will or not. For months, she had looked for a suitable candidate for a test trail only to realize that the best person for the job lived two blocks away from her.

Transformation

Day 1

My specimens of Cordyline Cotinifolia finally arrived from the Amazonian Forest today. It was a pain getting these through Customs but, luckily, my grandfather’s old connections came through. I still don’t believe these exotic flowers are the key to eternal youth but I have no choice but to continue his research if I want to get my hands on his inheritance. I’ll be documenting all experiments going forward. Wish me luck.

Day 3

I ground some leaves into a fine powder and added it to the base solution he had been developing on the day he died. The chemical reaction was interesting but I still don’t see how the combination is to produce anything other than a dud. I need to dig deeper into his writings to see if I can make sense of them or not.

Work of Art

(…)

The painting stood before Harry, a large horizontal canvas that spanned the entire length of the gallery room. It depicted an array of multicolored spirals that seemed to move with him as he paced from left to right. The illusion of movement was impressive and, try as he may, he couldn’t understand what technique had been used to produce it.

As he carefully examined the powerful brush strokes, a warm feminine voice rang in his ears. It belonged to a tall woman in her late twenties with long, braided black hair and a diamond nose ring. She was wearing a tight PVC dress and thigh-high boots and her words were:

“Do you like what you see?”

“It’s a very intriguing composition,” he replied, glancing at her. “Are you the artist?”
