Excerpts

Drained Again

Phoebe was chained to a dank stone wall. Her mind drifted in and out of consciousness as she tried to piece together what had happened to her. All her dreams were red and had sharp fangs in them. Weary eyes roved her surroundings, which were simultaneously alien and familiar at the same time. Wherever she was, she was certain she had been there before. Perhaps she had never left.

“Ah, you’re awake,” Katherine purred. “Good. I didn’t want to do this while you were unconscious because where’s the fun in that, really?”

Phoebe looked in the direction from which the sound had come and saw her friend leaning against a staircase railing, holding a glass of white wine in her hand. “How are you today, sweetie?” Katherine asked.

Final Debate

It was the final debate before the general election and things were finally heating. Any many whispered rumors that neither party acknowledged nor disproved, the moderator of KFGTV was pulling in all the stops to get to the truth once and for all.

Her name was Helen Sawyer and her work in the field was respected by both colleagues and rivals around the world. Everyone knew she was as unbiased as she could be and would not take any form of slander or evasive replies as facts.

Her guests that Saturday night were Emily Taylor, leader of the North American branch of the New Amazonian Movement and Luke Jordan, a former evangelical turned Conservative whose latest poll results were against him and everything he stood for. Often accused of lying and manipulating facts to gain support from the masses, it appeared that for once he was being truthful in his claims.

Ghost Story

If anyone asked Mary Lou Wilkins if she believed in the supernatural, her answer would be a resounding “no”. Ghosts weren’t real, and neither were witches, vampires, werewolves, and whatnot. Those who claimed otherwise were either too gullible for their own good or conmen (and women) who shamelessly exploited other people for their own personal gain. Since she was neither stupid nor a crook, anything considered unnatural had to be impossible.

It was therefore no surprise that when she first saw the floating apparition with long blonde hair and vacant white eyes outside her new apartment, she immediately dismissed it as her brain playing tricks on her and pretended nothing had happened. She knew for sure what was real and what wasn’t, and nothing would ever make her change her mind.

The very next day, she saw the strange spirit again, lurking behind her in the bathroom mirror. It was a woman in her late twenties wearing a torn silk robe, her hands and feet covered in dirt.

Nothing

We all have favorite things in life, whether it’s books, pieces of music, TV shows, movies… the works. Personally, I like words. I enjoy having them roll off my tongue in an explosion of sound, unleashing them on a blank sheet of paper while my fingers tremble with excitement, or pressing keys in a frantic dance by a keyboard screen. Words are everything to me and yet the one I love the most will probably surprise you. My favorite word is… nothing.

Yes, nothing, the complete opposite of everything I’ve just said, and if it’s the opposite, then is that not a contradiction of terms or is there more to it that you’re not grasping yet?

If you think about it, there shouldn’t be for if something can be born of nothing then nothing doesn’t exist, and if nothing doesn’t exist, how can it be a favorite word of mine?
