Excerpts

Farewell Party

It was the last day at his current company and, against all odds, Paul was getting teary-eyed. The fact that all his co-workers had gathered to throw him a farewell party didn’t make things easier.

“You guys…” he said, covering his mouth with his left hand at the sight of the colorful balloons and the lime and ginger cake he loved so much. “You didn’t have to do this.”

“Don’t be ridiculous!” Jeanne was the first to hug him. “It’s not every day one of us leaves for something better. You were always one of the best, Paul. “You deserve this and so much more. Come on, folks. Let’s give a round of applause to our certified winner here.”

Everyone joined her in celebrating his great achievement. From lowly cubicle worker to an intermediate position in another firm in a little over six months. It didn’t matter he was siding with the competition. It was still a win.

Margo 2.0

Thomas could hardly contain his excitement when he entered Jonah’s improvised lab and glimpsed at what awaited him there. He had done it! The son of a bitch had actually done it!

“Oh my god, tell me I’m not dreaming!” Thomas salivated.

“You’re not dreaming,” Jonah replied, a screwdriver in his right hand.

“But how? The current tech is nowhere near that level.”

“It is now. You keep forgetting how resourceful I am.”

“I guess so. Is it operational yet?”

“Don’t call her an ‘it’. No, she’s not operational yet but she will be soon,” Jonah smirked.

“Come on! A fucking fembot is not a real woman!”

“If she’s programmed to act like one and follows her programming to the letter, then I say it is,” Jonah stepped away from his creation and said, “Amazing, isn’t she?”

Use Me

Lucy watched the emerald pendant before her eyes as it swung back and forth, back and forth… the first signs of trance were already visible in her slow breaths and loose muscles falling on the heavy sofa.

“That’s it, my dear, you’re doing great,” Francine cooed, a hint of a smile on her gentle face. “With every second you follow the pendant, you’re getting closer and closer to that delicious state of mind you crave so much. Do you want to go into trance for me?”

“Yes, Francine,” Lucy replied, her lower lip twitching. The questions were always the same and so were her responses, a perfect conditioning circle constantly being reinforced.

“Good girl. Why do you want to go into trance for me?”

“Because… because I want to feel yours again.”

What’s Mine

“Where is he?” the angry FBI agent asked. “Where is Professor Delbrook?”

“I already told you I don’t have a clue,” Hans replied, fresh blood dripping down his chin.

“Not good enough!” the other agent in the room punched him again, shattering another one of his teeth. “Tell us.”

“I can’t tell you what I don’t know and you’re not allowed to do this!” Hans spat. “I know my rights!”

“Your rights mean nothing when national security is at stake. If we don’t find out his whereabouts soon, everyone in the country will be in danger.”

The three men were inside Hans’ old study at the University of Southern Maine, the two agents wearing black suits and matching sunglasses and the former associate sporting a colorful Hawaiian-style shirt that direly needed retirement.

“Okay, hold on a second,” Hans spat red on the bear-skin rug at his feet. “What the hell do you mean by that? Please tell me what’s going on! What did Robert do?”
