In the first draft of this story, the main character was called Bill and he had a girlfriend named Samantha.
In the second draft, Bill became Joe and Samantha Abigail. She’s also a hypnotist.
In the third draft, you’re the main character and you’re being entranced by reading these words.
There won’t be a fourth.
How this story came to be
Writing isn’t a static affair. It goes through many changes along the way. You usually start with a rough idea, some scenes here and there and then you keep adding to it, rewriting some passages and adding some more. Sometimes, new paths come to you as you’re polishing one of these drafts and then the story takes on a whole new meaning. Rare are the occasions when the first passage is the one you wish to keep.
I’ve written a lot of stories over the years and I can count by the fingers of one hand the number of pieces that didn’t suffer massive edits through and through. The first draft isn’t meant to be perfect, but a guideline for deeper avenues. Even my 55-word stories sometimes start one way and end in another completely different than the original intent.
I wanted to play with that reality in this humorous take. Thank you for reading.
