Bonus Story – Hungry Shadows

Bonus Stories are special features posted at the end of each month (depending on total pledges) and available to all patrons from the get-go. Bonus Stories are exclusive to my Patreon for the time being. While I may decide to release them publically in the future, as I do with the regular Saturday Stories, for now, this is how things go.

The piece of this month is entitled Hungry Shadows. Ian is having strange nightmares that won’t go away but his girlfriend may have the solution: hypnotize him to sleep. On a previous poll, my patrons decided they wanted to read something in-between gentle and mischievous and this piece combines the two moods.

“God… NO!” Ian opened his eyes and spasmed out of bed, drenched in a never-ending pool of sweat. Another nightmare! A terrible and purposeless vision of death and decay festering deep inside his subconscious, but nothing real. Still, even illusions take a toll on a person’s psyche when they last for longer than they should, and his had been going on for almost a month now.

“Are you okay? I heard you scream,” Emily emerged from the bathroom, hair wrapped in a silky white towel. It was five-thirty in the morning and she needed to hurry to get out of the house in time for her shift to begin.

“I am now. It happened again, that’s all.”

“That sucks,” the young nurse sighed. “The new meds are not working, huh?”

“I guess not. I need to schedule another appointment with Dr. Carruthers to see what we can do.”

“Are you sure you want to do that? Because there’s something else we can go for again that won’t cost you a penny… just saying.”
