Like Poisoned Apples
Mara’s mouth tasted like poisoned apples, but Elena couldn’t turn away.
Around them, the Halloween masquerade pulsed with bass, a blur of velvet capes and plastic fangs, yet Elena heard only the rhythmic snap of Mara’s black lace fan. Gold flecks swirled in Mara’s obsidian eyes, spinning until the strobe lights vanished into that dark vortex.
“Look at me, little moth,” Mara murmured, her fingers curling beneath Elena’s chin. “Surrender your thoughts and just let the fog roll in.”
A strange, honeyed numbness seeped behind Elena’s temples. She tried to pull back, but her resistance dissolved like ash. The vibrant chaos of the party faded to a muted gray; only the contour of Mara’s painted lips remained: sharp and impossible to disobey. The gothic beauty asserted such an effortless ownership that Elena shivered from the roots of her hair to the soles of her boots.
“Good girl,” Mara purred, stepping back and crooking a single, claw-tipped finger. “Now kneel, and don’t rise until I tell you to.”
The command rang inside Elena’s skull like a struck bell. The last flicker of her will died out as her knees hit the cold wooden floor.
