Nothing Here
Cindy opened her present. Inside the colorful box was another box which in turn had another box.
“Are we playing Russian dolls?” she asked.
“No,” Maria replied. “Keep going”
Five minutes later, Cindy opened the last box. It was empty.
“What’s this?”
“Your free will.”
“But there’s nothing here!”
“Exactly, dear.”
Cindy’s eyes went blank.
How this story came to be
Many years ago, my mother gave me a strange present. It was a large box that had a smaller box inside, and then another box, another, and another… I must have opened at least fifteen different boxes until I reached the last one and found a small key inside. The key opened another box she had hidden in plain sight and inside was my birthday present.
For some reason, I remembered this story today and wrote this piece on a whim, partially inspired by these memories. Would you like to receive such a gift?
