A Comment/Review on Robert Towers’ “My New Salon”
Today, I decided to have a look at Robert Towers’ My New Salon and, as much as it pains me to say it, I came out quite disappointed after doing so. I have to mention this is the first time reading anything by this author but, after finishing this one, I did take a look at some of his other works available and the fascination with hair seems to be a prevalent one.
Okay, let’s move on to the story. The concept of a beauty salon where not only hair gets done but thoughts change as well as a result of it isn’t new but it can be put to great use. I didn’t see anything of the sort thus far in this one. The piece puts us in the shoes of Madeleine who is convinced by her best friend to go for a new hairstyle after she herself underwent quite the transformation. From the outset, we can tell where things are going and that’s not a bad thing as long as the journey getting there proves interesting.
Unfortunately, it’s riddled with typos, awkward phrasings and multiple repetitions. The story – or should I say the opening chapter because this is obviously incomplete – is a little under 2400 words long but it drags. A tight edit could perhaps make it more appealling but this version lacks one and as such, I ended up not liking what I read which is a shame because, as mentioned earlier, the concept can be put to good use.
I’ve noticed that the author has posted several unfinished stories in the past. I don’t know if this one will continue or not. If it does, I may continue to look at it to see if the sequence develops in a more satisfying way. If not, my initial disappointment is all that will remain.
