Bonus Story – Digital Matrixes in the Making

Bonus Stories are special features posted at the end of each month (depending on total pledges) and available to all patrons from the get-go. Bonus Stories are exclusive to my Patreon for the time being. While I may decide to release them publicly in the future, as I do with the regular Saturday Stories, for now, this is how things go.

The piece for the month of April is a supernatural (and sci-fi) FD MC story. Here’s the synopsis

Matthew suspects there’s something strange happening in his workplace, but the truth is far more horrific than he ever imagined

“I’m telling you, Joanne, there’s something fishy happening in the underground levels!” Matthew grumbled, his arms crossed, as he stared at his incredulous coworker.
“Paranoid much?” she scoffed, blowing on her fingernails. “You come up with new conspiracy theories every week, Matt. It’s getting annoying.”
“This time is different.”
“That’s what you always say and I’ve yet to see any evidence. What are you basing yourself on this time, huh?”
Matthew pulled out a crumpled shipping manifest from his back pocket, smoothing it across the break room table. “Look at these delivery logs. Three dozen unmarked containers came through loading dock C in the last forty-eight hours. No shipping labels, no standard tracking codes. Just… boxes.”
Joanne rolled her eyes and snatched the paper, scanning it quickly. Her dismissive expression flickered for a moment, a single microsecond of uncertainty before returning to her skeptical stance. “So what? Warehouse gets random shipments all the time.”
“Not like these,” Matthew muttered, leaning forward. “These were handled differently. Special freight elevator, different crew. No standard warehouse personnel. I’ve been watching.”
A maintenance worker walked past, and Matthew lowered his voice. His fingers tapped against the manifest. Something about those boxes felt wrong – not just different, but off in a way he couldn’t explain. And Joanne’s casual dismissal only made him more certain something was brewing beneath the surface of their industrial complex.
“And that’s not all,” he added.
“Okay. What else do you got?” she crossed and uncrossed her legs.
“Have you noticed how the night shift workers look different lately?”
“Different how?” She stared at him.
“Their eyes seem vacant now like all life has been drained away from them,” he replied, and an uncomfortable silence settled between them.
Joanne shook her head, her skepticism unbroken. “You can’t seriously believe this nonsense. What are you planning on doing about these mysterious boxes and zombie-like workers?”
Matthew leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “I’m going to stake out the loading dock tonight. Hide in the maintenance closet near dock C and see what’s happening during the night shift.”
“That’s insane,” Joanne hissed. “You’ll get fired if security catches you.”
“Better fired than ignorant,” he muttered, already mapping out his surveillance plan.
She couldn’t believe her ears. “Is it? You’ve got a good thing going on here, Matt. The company pays way above your grade, and you’ve got all the benefits you could ask for. Why would you risk all of that to chase after ghosts?”
Matthew’s jaw clenched. He knew Joanne wouldn’t understand. Nobody ever did. But something fundamental was changing inside the complex, and he was the only one paying attention.
“Some things are worth risking everything for,” he said.
“Agreed, but this is not one of them. I don’t see anything out of the ordinary here.”
“You don’t see it because you don’t want to,” he concluded. “Something is happening, and I’m going to find out what it is.”
