Bonus Story – Collision Course

When a rude SUV driver rams her car and refuses to apologize, Dr. Vanessa Madsen teaches him a lesson on accountability he won’t soon forget.

“Son of a bitch!”
The impact jolted Dr. Vanessa Madsen’s car sideways, metal crunching against metal as the black SUV slammed into the passenger door. Coffee spilled all over the leather seats and her crisp white blouse.
Through the spider-webbed windshield, she glimpsed the offending driver – a thick-necked man in a cheap suit, talking into his cellphone and gesturing with complete disregard. She checked her reflection – a thin trickle of blood ran from her temple into her lips. She tasted it, and her gaze hardened.
Her professional calm, honed through years of clinical psychology and dealing with manipulative patients, evaporated on the spot. In its place rose a cold fury that made her hands clench around the steering wheel. This wasn’t going to be some routine insurance exchange. Not today.
Her door screeched open. The world spun for a moment as she landed her first step on the asphalt – concussion, most likely, but she pulled herself together, refusing to show any sign of weakness. The SUV driver was already out of the vehicle too – all six-foot-something of testosterone and cheap cologne.
“You want to explain what the hell just happened?” She asked, her voice rising above the street noise and all the commotion around them.
The man first looked at her bloodied temple, and then at her torn blouse. For a moment, he looked concerned, but his default aggression soon took over the conversation. “I wasn’t paying attention,” he said. “Shit happens!”
Vanessa stepped closer. One of her heels split open as she did so, but she didn’t falter. Instead, she kept pushing forward, and he took a step back.
“You weren’t paying attention?” she repeated. “That’s your fucking explanation for potentially causing serious injury?”
“Oh, fuck off, lady!” he rolled his eyes. “That doesn’t look so bad. Why are you being such a drama queen?”
